Our Story

Our journey started in Dec. 2011, when I adopted Sugarfoot. He was 7 months old and I was 11 years old. I gained interest in miniature horses a few years before, after getting in a bad riding accident and growing a fear of riding. The farm that got me to sit on a horse again said that I could take driving lessons, if I rode again. So I did. I still had a huge fear of riding, but that was how I started to learn to drive miniature horses and learn them in general. I only rode at that farm a few times, but it was a start to my healing process.

After a few years of driving lessons and very slowly gaining the confidence to ride again, my parents told me that I could get a miniature horse of my own. Just before I got Sugarfoot, I had a horse that I was taking care of that developed Moon Blindness. Because he couldn't see anymore in his left eye, he started to become unsafe to be around and attacked me instead of the horse he was was going after so that was when it was decided to get me another horse.

Since getting Sugarfoot in 2011, we have done many different events, from obstacle challenges to parades. He was taught to drive when he was 3 years old. I have taught him many different tricks that he loves to perform, just so he can get treats. I had thoughts many years ago of wanting to make Sugarfoot a therapy horse, but didn't actually know what they where and did. In Oct. 2019, I decided I was going to change my college major and study Exercise Science: Occupational Therapy. I found our partners', Honey's Mini Therapy Adventures, shortly after and got to go on my first therapy visit in Dec. 2019. It had been quite awhile since Sugarfoot had been out in public anywhere, but in Jan. 2020 I loaded him in the back of my moms mini van and we took a drive to our local Tractor Supply and the Florida Horse Park in Ocala, Fl.

After months and months of training, we were officially registered as a therapy team to the American Miniature Therapy Horse Association in June 2020. Due to Covid-19, all nursing homes and others alike were locked down so we were unable to go on our first therapy visit together. However in Aug. 2020, just after I went back to college for my junior year, my dad suggested adding a friend and future therapy horse to be with Sugarfoot. That is when my parents started to scope out and visit mini's that were available and now I have Stormy Tango, aka Tango. He will not be a therapy horse for a long time, but you can follow his training progress on our YouTube channel, Horse Training with Miniatures.
